parking tips

For all locations:  DO NOT leave anything valuable in your car!!!

For downtown venues (Freight, Berkeley Public Library):  Metered street parking until 6pm (enforced right up to 6pm); there are plans (sometime after July 2026) to extend the hours to 8pm and include Sunday.

The Center Street garage (entrance on Addison Street) is the closest parking garage to the Freight, but other downtown garages may have cheaper rates.  Click HERE for a map of other downtown Berkeley parking lots. You can also find free on-street parking (2 hour limit Monday-Friday until 6pm) in residential areas below Martin Luther King and north of University.

Public Transportation

The downtown Berkeley BART station is convenient to the Freight and the Berkeley Public Library, and numerous bus lines pass by on Shattuck Ave. There are parking lots (free on weekends and after mid-afternoon weekdays) at some other stations, including North Berkeley and Ashby (one station to the north or the south), so taking BART for one quick stop is stress-free method of transportation and may be cheaper than parking in a downtown garage.

The Ashby BART station is close to La Pena and the Starry Plough.
