and I'll answer your questions and give you listening
suggestions. Bring a recording device, as I hope to do a short
repertoire session at the end of the workshop. Yee hoo! Autoharp with Evo Bluestein: Evo specializes in an autoharp style that is well suited for southern old time music, inspired by the late autoharp master Kilby Snow. All levels are welcome; Pre-tuned autoharps strongly encouraged! Old time banjo with Paul Brown FULL: Bring your banjo and learn learn songs, tunes and musical approaches
from Paul. We’ll employ some unusual tunings and keys, plus the old
regulars. We may consider Round Peak clawhammer style, Virginia tunes
from Fields and Wade Ward, Paul’s unique finger-picking styles, and
central Virginia songs passed down through his family. You should
be an intermediate-to-advanced player and reasonably adept at tuning,
or willing to try! Fun is guaranteed. Down home songs with Benton Flippen and Frank Bode: Old time songs from Surry County, North Carolina, the
occasional Gospel song, and a few early bluegrass standards will be at
the core of this fun and informal session. All levels welcome!

Old Time Fiddle with Sammy Lind: Sammy
teaching tunes by ear, breaking them down phrase by phrase, emphasizing
bowing. The rhythms of old time fiddling can be very complex,so it is
very important to break down tunes phrase by phrase to capture the
desired sound. Alternate tunings will also be explored; repertoire
might include fiddle tunes from Northern Virginia, West Virginia,
Kentucky, North Carolina, Missouri and Southern Illinois. Bring a
recording device if you have one! For intermediate to advanced
players. Old Time Banjo with Molly Tenenbaum: We'll focus on some of the great songs of Cousin Emmy ("Going Across the Sea," "Johnny Booker") and Samantha Bumgarner ("Cindy in the Meadows," "Worried Blues,") and maybe we'll have time for Lily May Ledford too, exploring their styles and expressions. Along the way we'll explore a variety of techniques, working on ways to make these songs your own with drop-thumb patterns, slides, and damped notes, with the goal being flexibility and expressiveness in any song you choose. Recording devices recommended. Questions?E-mail Molly at mbtennyATgmail.com. Molly Tenenbaum has been playing and teaching old-time banjo, fiddle, and guitar for over 25 years, and is known for her graceful and traditional old-time banjo playing. She is a member of two string bands, The Queen City Bulldogs and Dram County, and has a solo CD entitled Instead of a Pony. She lives in Seattle, where she teaches poetry, literature, and the banjo. Singing with Sheila Kay Adams FULL:
Sheila will demonstrate how her older family members used their voices
while singing what they all referred to as "them old love songs." After
this brief, but essential history, Sheila will teach a song with the
class as she learned - 'old-style-knee-to-knee'- then handouts will be
provided and the rest of the the workshop will be committed to teaching
as many songs as she can pack into the remaining time. Come ready to
sing, and to listen;you'll hear, learn and carry away some of the
magic. All levels welcome!
Old time jam with Benton, Paul and Frank: Bring your fiddle, banjo, mandolin or guitar. Or just come listen. Either way, this North Carolina-style get together will be memorable for you. It’ll feature some of Benton’s best tunes. If you want to learn a tune the old time way – listening, watching, and trying for yourself – we’ll make time for that too.
