SATURDAY NIGHT SQUARE DANCE!
Triple
Chicken Foot, from the Los Angeles area, is an old time band who love to play
for squares and contras – they’ll be part of the BOTMC Saturday night square
dance, along with the Pilot Mountain Bobcats and Mike Bryant, Joseph Decosimo
& Karen Celia Heil. Caller Susan Michaels,
also from the Los Angeles area, will be team-tagging with the Bay Area’s Erik
Hoffman for a rocking evening of square dancing at Ashkenaz. The callers will teach all the dances, no
experience is necessary, and you don’t need to bring a partner. All ages are welcome!
For those who want a break from dancing, a
jam session in the back studio, open to all comers, will be led by Mark
Olson & Penny Critchlow (8pm) and Grace Forrest & Karen Celia
Heil (10pm on).
But wait - there's more - before the dance, from 6:30pm to 7:30pm, Thomas Maupin and Jay Bland will teach a flatfooting workshop in the back studio.
Admission is $25 and that INCLUDES ADMISSION TO
THE SQUARE DANCE.

Triple Chicken Foot is a Los Angeles based Old Time
stringband, with Ben Guzman (Guzmonster) on fiddle and mandolin, Mike Heinle
(Musty Carl) on banjo and Kelly Marie Martin (K. Boogie) on guitar. Having played together for more than five
years, they’ve become a powerful dance band, and have recorded two CDs. Ben began playing in 2005 with Old Jitters
and apprenticed with Tom Sauber, learning many tunes that Tom learned from his
years of playing with Earl Collins and other older generation players. Originally an upright bass player, Mike began
playing clawhammer banjo when original Foot guitjo player Mike Daniels
departed; he took 1st place on a fretless banjo at Goleta 2009. Kelly started
playing old time music on the upright bass in Old Jitters after years of
playing punk/indie/folk. A self-taught guitar player, she hopes to one day
unwind the carter scratch which can be hard for a girl who likes to hustle the
rhythm along.

Susan Michaels, who hails from southern California, has been calling dances since 1980, at local evenings, weekend workshops, week-long elementary school programs, week-long family camps and dance weekends throughout the U.S. and Canada. She says: “I believe it is my mission to get people to hold hands in a circle and move to music.” |

After
being dragged to a Contra Dance in 1980, Erik Hoffman fell in love with
traditional American dance and music. Hoffman started calling in
1985, and has since called contras and squares across the country, as
well as in England and Denmark. Hoffman makes his home in
Oakland, CA, where he teaches music and calls as many dances as he
can. This year Erik will bring his warm, jovial, inclusive style
to the BOTMC Saturday night Square Dance. |
