The Pilot Mountain Bobcats
The
Pilot Mountain Bobcats will bring a style of old time string band music that
hasn’t been heard much, if at all, on the West Coast; you might call it old
time music in overdrive. We have rarely
heard such an intense, cohesive and focused sound. Over the past 20 years, the Pilot Mountain
Bobcats have dominated regional old time contests and fiddlers conventions
throughout the southeast, including Galax, Clifftop, Mt. Airy and many
others. They’ve performed throughout the
south and in England, but this is the first time they’ve ever been to the West
Coast. Nancy Sluys, the band’s fiddler,
is also a great banjo player who has won first place at Galax three times, and
second at Clifftop. She’s joined by Bill
Sluys on bass, Jacki Spector on banjo, and Allin Cottrell on guitar.
The
Pilot Mountain Bobcats will be performing in concert at the Freight on Thurs. Sept. 15, playing for the
square dance at Ashkenaz on Sat. Sept. 17, and
and
various band members will be giving
master class workshops at the Freight on Sun. Sept. 18.

Ginny
Hawker and Tracy Schwarz
Ginny
Hawker and Tracy Schwarz, from West Virginia, will be making a return trip to
the BOTMC; they were last here in 2006. Tracy was a member of the New Lost City
Ramblers with Mike Seeger and John Cohen (for 50 years!), and has also been
very active in Cajun music, recording and performing with the likes of the
Balfa Brothers. Ginny grew up in the
Primitive Baptist church and has
recorded extensively, including a wonderful CD a few years back with the late,
great Hazel Dickens and Carol Elizabeth Jones.
Emmylou Harris says that Ginny is one of her favorite singers, and we
agree!
Ginny
and Tracy will perform in concert at the Freight on Thurs. Sept. 15 and will give a master class workshop at the Freight on Sun. Sept. 18.
The ACES
The
ACES are a local all star band with Alan Senauke, Chad Manning, Eric Thompson,
and Suzy Thompson. ACES is an acronym of their first names. Chad is best known
for his bluegrass fiddling with the David Grisman Bluegrass Band and with
Laurie Lewis, but he is also a wonderful oldtime fiddler who has delved deeply
into those pre-bluegrass sounds from Kentucky and Tennessee. Alan Senauke has performed with High Country
and, with Eric & Suzy, in the Bluegrass Intentions and the Blue Flame
String Band. Eric, best known as a
flatpicker, plays fingerpicked old time banjo in this band!
The ACES perform in concert at the Freight on Thurs. Sept. 15.
ALSO: Kick-off Jam in the lobby with members of the Stairwell Sisters, starting at 5pm. FREE!
