Mike Bryant & Joseph Decosimo
 with Karen Celia Heil

Mike Bryant and Joseph Decosimo have both been first-place fiddle winners at Clifftop  (Mike has won twice and Joseph won last year), and as a duet made quite a splash last summer at Fiddle Tunes.  Bruce Molsky says “Mike has always been one of my fiddle heroes.” Banjo player and poet Molly Tenenbaum writes of Mike’s fiddling: “Oh my, it’s so graceful and delicate and fierce and full and responsive and deep and absolutely raging." National Old-Time Banjo Champion Joseph Decosimo is part of the up-and-coming younger generation of  old-time musicians who have infused the oldtime scene with energy and enthusiasm. Playing guitar will be our own Karen Celia Heil, who accompanied Joseph for his Clifftop-winning performance last summer.

Mike and Joseph are performing in concert at the Freight on Fri. Sept. 16, playing for the square dance at Ashkenaz on Sat. Sept. 17, and both will be giving master class workshops at the Freight on Sun. Sept. 18.

Thomas Maupin, Daniel Rothwell & Friends

Thomas Maupin, one of the greatest old time dancers in America, describes himself as a “self-taught buckdancer with a flatfoot style.” The rhythm and other-worldy gracefulness of this man’s dancing will knock you out! Thomas, who is 73 years old, will be accompanied by his grandson, Daniel Rothwell, who plays banjo, sings and tells stories; Daniel’s dad, Danny on guitar and a bass player, plus the 2008 National Champion buckdancer Jay Bland. Thomas Maupin has hoofed at Merlefest, Clifftop and many other places; he was just awarded the Tennessee Governor’s Arts Award. His basic humility and shyness go with his country upbringing, but he is absolutely passionate about dance: “I love old-time music. It’s got my rhythm. I am that band when I’m a-dancing.” Last year, a documentary film was released about Thomas Maupin, titled “Let Your Feet Do the Talkin’” and we’ll be showing that film at 7:30pm this evening.

Thomas Maupin & company will perform in concert on Fri Sept 16 at the Freight, and Thomas will teach a flatfooting workshop at Ashkenaz Sat Sept 17.

The film “Let Your Feet Do the Talkin’” will be shown at the Freight Fri Sept 16 at 7:30pm.

Craig & Meredith

Craig Ventresco & Meredith Axelrod

Craig Ventresco and Meredith Axelrod will be making their BOTMC debut this year.  Craig is a virtuoso guitarist whose music truly sounds like it was being made 100 years ago but without sounding at all mannered – he plays with a fierce intensity that conjures up a long-gone world.  Craig’s guitar playing was heard on the soundtracks of the films “Crumb” and “Ghost World.” Meredith, who sings with Devine’s Jug Band, is a powerful rhythm guitarist and blues singer who, like Craig, has made the music of the 1920s her own. For their BOTMC performance, they’ll focus on old time hillbilly sounds (rather than the more jazzy music that they usually play.)
